Associated Hebrew School's “Living Museum” celebrates our 100 years of serving Toronto’s Jewish community. When the school was founded in 1907, the State of Israel was still a dream. Jews of Eastern Europe were fleeing in droves from the vicious pogroms of Tsarist Russia, and many of the new immigrants came penniless. Yet, the pioneers of Associated established a school with a Zionist ideology believing that one day there would be a Jewish State. And, they did it with a commitment to serve any child who wanted a Jewish education, regardless of their ability to pay. These pillars of Tzionut (Zionism) and Klal Yisrael (Community of Israel) have remained strong throughout ten decades of bringing excellence to the teaching of Toronto’s children Torah alongside general studies. The “Living Museum” project explores our community’s history over the past hundred years. Each child from nursery through grade five at the Posluns campus of Associated brought in a family artifact that told a story about their family’s history. As you venture through our galleries, you will see a diverse array of artifacts— an old typewriter, documents, candlesticks and even a one hundred year old coffee grinder! Each artifact tells a piece of our community’s history. Each gallery has been studied and discussed in class. All the introductions to the galleries have been written by the students. Each gallery takes a closer look into the history of Canada, Israel, and Associated. This museum has been created as a tribute to our past and looking forward to another 100 years of serving Toronto’s Jewish community. Chazak, Chazak, V’Nitchazek – We have been strong. We are strong. May we continue to grow in strength. |
