Canada
In 1972, Paul Henderson scored the winning goal with 34 seconds left as Team Canada defeated the Soviet National Team 6 - 5 in the final game of the Canada-Soviet Hockey Series. In 1973 the satellite Anik A-2 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. When it was launched, Canada became the first country in the world to have a satellite in geostationary orbit for non-military communications. In 1980, it was the Qubec referendum. Quebeckers voted 60% against giving the provincial government the right to negotiate sovereignty. The loss put separating on hold for 15 years. A lot of changes were put in place by Pierre Trudeau during the referendum debate. Also in 1980, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope at St John's, Newfoundland, to raise money for cancer research. The run ended on Sept 1 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, after cancer was discovered in his lungs. Within days the Marathon had raised over $10 million and it has continued to inspire people all over the world. The tradition of the run continues today. In 1982, The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms came into effect. The Charter guarantees all Canadians fundamental rights, democratic rights, mobility rights, legal rights, equality rights and linguistic rights. The Charter has led to wonderful changes in Canadian law.
Israel
In 1960-70 there was a war called "War of Attrition" which was a fight between Egypt and Israel along with Suez Canal. In the year 1969, Golda Meir became the prime minster of Israel. She was the first women to become Prime Minster. In 1973, Israel was attacked by Egypt and Syria on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish year. Later on in the year 1977, there was something called the Jubilee Maccabiah. It is the largest sporting event ever to be held in the Middle East. In 1979, the Israel Egypt Peace Treaty was signed with the help of the U.S. Egypt was the first Arab nation to recognize and make piece with Israel. In 1980, the Israeli Lira was replaced with the Shekel. Between the years 1981-1983 there was the first Lebanon war. In 1982, there was the war of Galilee. In 1983, there was a peace settlement between Israel and Lebanon. In 1984, more than 6,000 Ethopian Jews came to live in Israel. In 1968, Israel has a population of 2,803,000 people and in 1987 the population grw up to 4,374,000 people.

In 1970 Dr. Levi Jacober retired. Samuel Kurtz retired in 1971 and Jenny Sneider retired in 1972. Jack Mandel became the Executive Secretary in 1965 and remained in that position until 1974 when Arthur Tannenbaum was appointed. Because of low enrolment, the board decided to discontinue the Talmud Torah in 1976. Day enrolment continued to expand. New principals, Helen Cait, and Sheldon Alspector were hired as General Studies principals while Edward Deutsch and Esther Gold were hired as the Hebrew Principals. Ruth Kurtz and Surie Nagel took over as the Beth Hayeled nurseries in 1969. Rabbi Akiva Egozi was hired in 1975 as our first Educational Director. He instituted the beginning of a new emphasis on coordination of curriculum between Judaic studies and General Studies. Under his direction, a seven volume Hebrew Curriculum for Day Schools and Yeshivot was published. It is being used in 400 Day Schools across the continent. Professor Zevi Adar of the Hebrew University was in charge of training teachers for the Diaspora. In 1987, Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto celebrated its 80th anniversary.
