Holidays

Holidays are important because we remember our past and tell special stories about our religion. Hanukah is very important to the Jewish people because it is the Festival of Lights. An important item we use on Hanukah is the Menorah. We burn candles in the menorah for 8 days to symbolize the 8 days the oil burned while we fought the Greeks.

Passover is also an important holiday because this holiday celebrates and remembers when the Jewish people were freed from Egypt under Pharaoh's rule. During Passover, we use a Hagaddah to tell the story of our people.

On Passover, we are not allowed to eat anything that rises because when the Jews were fleeing Egypt, they didn't have enough time to let the bread they were cooking rise, so theyjust took the unleavened bread. Now on Passover, we separate the silverware and dishes we use everyday, because we can't use the same plates with the unleavened bread and food we eat on Passover.
