This gallery is comprised of family portraits which are especially precious to the students. They depict family members from past generations and are sometimes the only link that famlies have to their early histories. The students observed that so many of these type of portraits are very serious, with the subjects dressed in their finest clothes and wearing serious expressions on their faces. We discussed the fact that in the early twentieth century people did not generally have personal cameras, so being photographed was a serious and formal event.
