The artifacts in this gallery represent many aspects of American Jewish Culture. The canasta box and the silver cup are souvenirs from gatherings of "Landsmanschaften" or clubs made up of immigrants from a particular place in Europe. Such clubs were common in the first half of the twentieth century, since new immigrants sought to keep ties with friends and family who came from the same towns in Europe. The citizenship documents found here are evidence of the great significance that immigrants placed on becoming American citizens. The postcards from the family-run resort in Upstate New York are throwback to a time when many Jews who lived in the New York area went to the mountains for a relaxing summer vacation away from the busy city. As a whole, these artifacts are examples of the variety of Jewish life that immigrants built for themselves in America, and individually they show that each of our families has a fascinating heritage.
