Pictures
Pictures can tell stories. Pictures can revive memories. Sometimes, pictures are the only things we have left to remember. We present this unique gallery for this reason, where we use these important artifacts that will carry our legacy forever.
Picture of Grandfather
Paris
Olga F.
This picture is important to my family because we only have three pictures of my grandfather as a child. Therefore, it is the only way I can learn about my grandfather’s childhood.
My grandfather was born in Budapest and then was hidden in a convent for a while. My great-great-aunt who had papers which said that she wasn’t Jewish took my great-grandfather and my grandfather and went to Paris (where the picture was taken). In this way she actually saved their life. There they met with my great-grandmother and went from Paris to New York.
Picture
Tashkent
Rachel S.
This artifact is from a time when it was rare to be able to take a picture, due to the cost. This is one of the only pictures my mother has with her mom.
The Jews in Russia were sent to Stalin's camps and my great-grandma went there for ten years, hiding her identity as a Jew. She got sick and died. After my grandma passed away, my mom moved to America.
Picture
Romania
Miriam S
My great great grandmother, Ruth, took a picture with her daughter, my great grandmother Citziliaah. They took this picture in Bocovina, Romania in 1915. My grandmother Miriam told me that my great great grandmother Ruth was a very strong woman that struggled through many hard times. You can see this by the way she looks. And that’s the story of this artifact. This is the only picture of my great grandmother and my great great grandmother, and it is very special to my family.
This picture is significant to the Jewish heritage since it is an important piece from before World War 1. It is used by my family to know about our family. This is important to the Jews because during any period of time pictures may have been the only thing people carried with them. So it could tell the story, and remind them of the past.
