Cook Book
United States
Lily K brought this recipe book for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. Lily’s maternal great grandmother, Lillian owned this recipe book. It has been in her family since 1960. Lily’s great grandmother wrote it herself and it is Lily’s great grandmother’s own recipes. It is significant to Lily’s family because her great grandmother was a wonderful cook, and everyone loved to come over to eat her amazing dishes. Lily’s family still talks about what an amazing cook she was. Lily’s mother, Laura, never met her great grandmother because she passed away before Lily’s mother was born. Laura remembers looking through the cookbook when she was growing up because it gave her a connection to the grandmother she never met. The family also wanted to keep it so they could remember all of the special things she made for Lily’s grandmother and Lily’s great uncle when they were little. The story behind the recipe book was that Lily’s great grandmother decided to write down her recipes one day, and Lily’s grandmother remembers being there when she was little. She was actually the one who wrote down Lily’s great grandmother's name on the front of the cover. The K. and Perdomo families cherish this object.

Song Book
Hungary
Adley U brought this book of songs for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This music book is from Budapest, Hungary. The date of publication was in 1884. It belonged to Adley’s paternal great grandmother, Eva Reiner U. It is significant because she didn’t bring many mementos of life growing up in Hungary with her when she traveled to Morocco. This book is a memory of a life that doesn't exist anymore. She was learning music as well as drawing. She particularly liked fashion drawing (see what's sketched on the inside cover). Adley’s great grandmother never graduated because in her last year of high school in 1939, her father had the wisdom to leave Hungary during World War II. Adley’s great grandmother was 18 when she left. Her family went to Tangier in Morocco and then to Canada. Budapest was a very sophisticated city, and the Jewish people were very major contributors to Hungarian life. Eva’s father was in the choir in the Doheny Street Temple. This shul still exists and can seat over 2000 people. The book is Hebrew songs set to music for Tefillah like Lecha Dod, Aleynu, and Hallel.

In the diary he wrote about his life before Israel became a country, and his role in the War of Independence. He began to write it in Manchester, England in 1947, and then ended it in the newly declared State of Israel in May of 1948. The diary describes his journey from England while leaving his family and his sick mother behind at the young age of 17. When he got to what was then called Palestine, he joined the Hagana and was part of many battles. One interesting story in the diary is when Henry’s great grandfather writes about how he and his friends were taking bets on what the new Jewish country would be named.
