Hannah L. brought this flight log for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This object is a flight manual that belongs to Fred L. He is Hannah L’s paternal grandfather. It was given to him during his time in the US Navy. He served from October 1957 - June 1960. He was a Bombardier Navigator, which means that he flew in a plane off of an aircraft carrier, and his responsibility was to drop bombs from the plane. Thankfully, he never actually had to go to war. In this log, Fred L kept records of each of his flights. In this flight log, Fred L kept track of what plane he flew in, how he flew, and other crucial things.

Judah L brought this special Navy hat for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This object belonged to Judah L’s paternal grandfather when he joined the United States Army. Fred L got this hat more than 60 years ago. Judah L's grandfather always wanted to join the U.S Army, and he finally got the chance to go in the army and serve his country. Judah L’s grandfather was called up to be the Lieutenant commander which was the third to highest rank in the army. Judah L’s grandfather was lucky because even though he had a high rank, he never had to go into war. Judah L's grandfather was a person who did the difficult calculations and told people when to drop a bomb on the enemy.

Army Uniform

Albert D brought this United States Army uniform for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. Albert’s maternal grandfather’s US Army uniform from Vietnam is especially important to Albert. His grandfather died a few months before he was born in 2007, and he was named after him. Albert’s grandfather was a Major and a Doctor in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He served in Pleiku, Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. He received numerous awards and medals, including the Vietnam Service medal and the Bronze Star. He also operated on many wounded soldiers and saved their lives.

Andrew F. brought these war tokens for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. Andrew’s paternal great grandfather, Marvin F., received this shirt in Dayton, Ohio in 1942 upon being introduced into the U.S. Army as a chaplain at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The medal was also received in Dayton, Ohio for good conduct.

Zahava S. brought this medal and documents for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. Zahava’s paternal great grandfather, Bernard S, was in the United States Army during World War II in 1945. He received a Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal. The medal Zahava S.brought is the Good Conduct Medal. Her great grandfather was very proud that he was able to defend his country as Jewish American and help defeat the Axis Powers in World War II. Zahava’s great grandfather entered the army in 1943, and he served as a Private First Class in Company B of the 13th Mountain Medical Battalion. During the war he served in India, Burma, and China. He received medals for Good Conduct and a Bronze Star victory medal. He was very proud to represent himself as proud Jew while serving his country.

Rae H. brought this uniform for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This uniform belongs to Rae H’s paternal grandfather, Eli H. Rae H's grandfather served as a flight surgeon, constructor and a gastroenterologist in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. The uniform is originally from USAF School of Aerospace Medicine in Texas. He was in the Air Force from 1968-1970.

ID Card
Romania
Lizzie P. brought this ID card for the 2019 Moriah School Heritage Fair. Lizzie P.’s maternal great-great grandmother, Mali Schauer, received this identity card issued by the Association of the Former Deportees to Transnistria in 1948 after she was liberated from the ghetto called Copaigorod. Mali was born in Radauti, Romania on September 7, 1900. She got married to Abraham Schauer and moved to Bucarest, Romania. During World War II, Mali and her entire family were among Romanian Jews deported to the ghetto of Copaigorod which was located in Transnistria. In the ghetto, Mali was assigned to cook and clean for a German officer. The identity card provided information about Mali Schauer which included her name, birth date, marital status, occupation, she had a child under the age of 16 years old, name of ghetto, her current resident, her ID number 10380 and more, all written in Romanian. This identity card is significant to Lizzie's family because it links the family to their ancestors and gives a piece of history of what happened during and after the Holocaust.
