Jewelry Pins
United States
Jeannie G brought these jewelry pins for the 2017 Moriah School Heritage Fair. Jeannie G's maternal great
grandmother, purchased the jewelry pins
in the 1940s in the store, Marshall Fields. She purchased them because she loved costume jewelry. Jeannie’s great grandmother saved her money to buy these pins. Before Jeannie’s
great grandmother died, she gave them to Jeannie’s maternal grandmother
because the jewelry pins were very
important to her, and she wanted
them to be kept for a long time. Today, Jeannie’s maternal grandmother
wears them on her clothing.
Jeannie’s grandmother gave some of the pins to Jeannie’s
aunt and mom. The pins are important to
Jeannie because Jeannie is going to be the fourth generation to get the jewelry pins. Jeannie is also named after her great grandmother, so the pins are very meaningful to Jeannie.

Engagement Ring
Russia
Mikaela S brought this engagement ring for the 2017 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This engagement ring is from 1889 in Horodetz, Russia. It belonged to Mikaela’s paternal great-great grandmother, Esther Resetsky. She received this as an engagement ring from Leib Shub. Esther died at the age
of 40 due to malaria during World War I. She had seven sons and daughters
when she died. Esther’s husband had to flee to the United State because he was
a landowner, and Jews couldn’t own land. Also, three of Esther’s children were already in the United States when Esther died. When Mikaela’s great-great
grandmother died, Mikaela’s great grandmother, Bashke kept the ring. Bashke whom Mikaela’s middle name is after, was only 16 when she came to the United States with her three other siblings. The only item she had of her mother were some pictures, jewelry, and the engagement ring. She kept the ring but never wore it because it had and still has sentimental value. The only time Bashke took the ring out was to look at and tell her children her mother's story. The ring is significant to Mikaela’s family because it was her great-great grandmother’s engagement ring, and she died at an early age.The object means to Mikaela that she has a link to the past because it shows her that she has something of her great-great grandmother, and Mikaela knows her story.
