Joshua K brought this army uniform for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This army jacket once belonged to Michael J, the paternal great grandfather of Joshua K. He served for the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in the China Burma India Theater. Joshua’s great grandfather worked under General Joseph Stilwell for four years. Although he didn’t fight during the war, he did a very important job. He ran the army grocery store. He was very brave to serve in the army during such bad times.
This jacket is cherished by the K family.
Yellow Jewish star

Gabe Shein brought a Jewish star for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This Jewish Star once belonged to Menashe, the maternal great grandfather of Gabe Shein. This Jewish Star was given to him by the Nazis as he was forced to wear it. The reason the Nazis forced them to wear it is because they could identify the Jews quickly. After the war, Menashe saved it and passed it to Gabe’s grandfather. It’s significant to Gabe’s family because it is a symbol of Jewish suffering.
Gabe and his family will cherish this object for many years to come.
Flight Log Book

Sarah L brought this flight log book for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This flight log book has a very special story. It was used by Sarah L’s grandfather, Fred L, in the U.S. Navy. It is important to Sarah’s family because it reminds them of the great things that Fred did for his country as a pilot. He used it to keep track of his flights. This flight log book isn't used today, rather it is cherished by the family.

England and Germany
Rachel K brought these army tags for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair. These army tags have an interesting story. These army tags once belonged to Benjamin (Benny) Schmulowitz, the maternal great grandfather of Rachel K. Benny wore these army tags while he was fighting in World War Two. He wore the army tags while being a soldier for the United States and fighting in both Germany and England. He was involved in liberating the camps in Germany. These army tags are very significant to Rachel’s family because the tags had Benny's identification on it and was passed down in memory of him.

Civil War Discharge Documents

Samantha K brought this document and picture for the 2016 Moriah School Heritge Fair. This document has a special story. This document belonged to William Wallace Warfield Cate, the maternal great-great-great-great grandfather of Samantha K. William Cate’s unit was stationed in Massachusetts during the time of the Civil War. This document is his original discharge paper from the Civil War. This document is from 1865. William Cate was desperate to join the army, so he ran away to join a battalion. He was only 16, so the army wouldn’t let him fight as a soldier, but they allowed him to be a drummer boy. Once he was old enough to fight, after a short time, he was so miserable that he purposely shot himself in the foot to be discharged from the war. His plan worked, and he was discharged. William Cate was given these papers to officially discharge him from the war. Now this document is on display at Samantha’s grandmother’s house. This document is a piece of history that links Samantha’s family to someone who served in the Civil War.

Susie B. brought this for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This army uniform has a special story. This uniform belonged to Monroe W., the maternal great grandfather of Susie B. He got this uniform when he enrolled in the United States Army. He knew that the was going to be drafted, and instead of waiting to be called to the army, he decided to enroll in the Air Force. Despite the desire to be in the Air Force, Monroe W. couldn’t. He had an injury that prevented him from fulfilling his dream as there were no specialized planes. This uniform is significant because it shows that he cared about his country. Although this uniform is not used today, the message is to never give up. During a time of war, people have to defend their country and never give up.
Susie and her family will cherish this object for many years to come.

Ariel S brought this flag and painting
for the 2016 Moriah School Heritige Fair. This flag has a special story. This flag once belonged to Jack Harris, the paternal great grandfather of Ariel S. This flag is from World War II in Berchtesgaden. Ariel’s great grandfather was a glider pilot for the 101st Airborne.During the capture of Berchtesgaden, the town where Hitler had his headquarters, Ariel’s great grandfather cut this flag down. This flag is ignificant to Ariel because it represents how important it was for her great grandfather to serve in the United States Army, and his role in helping to rescue the persecuted. Even though this can be thought of as an evil symbol, Ariel’s family keeps it because it represents how proud they are of Jack Harris.

Eliana brought these war items for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair.This uniform and medals once belonged to George W, the paternal grandfather of Eliana W. As a young boy, Eliana's grandfather was in the Holocaust. When the Holocaust was over and he survived, he joined the American army because he was so thankful that the Americans freed him from the Germans. Eliana's grandfather fought in the Korean War in 1952, where he got his uniform and earned his medals. These items are important to Eliana and her family because
it reminds them that he was a great American soldier and hero.
