These pictures were taken in Humenne, Czechoslovakia. The people in the picture are Shlomo, Joshua's great grandmother's brother and his wife. Joshua is named after him. His name is Joshua Shlomo B. It belonged to Joshua's maternal grandmother, and she received it before the war.
These are the only pictures of him because he was murdered in the

him. During the Holocaust, he was hiding in the woods and was killed by
partisans. They were a resistance group of non-Jews in the woods. The
picture remains in Joshua's family to preserve his memory. It is the
only picture that Joshua’s family have of him and this is how Joshua is
named after him. Joshua and his family will cherish this object for many

Wedding Picture
Czechoslovakia
Ethan D. brought this picture for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This picture has a special story. It once belonged to Rose and Sam, the maternal great grandparents of Ethan D. It was taken at their wedding on February 17, 1946. It is the only picture of his great grandparents before they came to America. Ethan’s great grandparents are both Holocaust survivors. His great grandmother was in Auschwitz and his great grandfather was in Mauthausen. After the Holocaust, they each separately went to Budapest, Hungary to see if anybody in their family survived the war. That is where they met. Rose and Sam decided to get married. Because they were stripped of all their belongings, they had nothing festive or appropriate for their wedding. They ended up getting married in Czechoslovakia and everything you see in the picture is borrowed.
This object means a lot to Ethan because
he barely knew his great grandparents and this special object connects him to
his family history.
Picture
Lithuania
Benjamin E brought this picture for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This photograph has a special story. This is a photograph of Benjamin E’s great-great-great-great grandfather, Yechezkel. It was taken circa 1850. This photograph belonged to Benjamin E’s mother’s Bubby. She got it from her brother, Rav Herschel Aaronson. Yechezkel wore his tefillin and tallis all day. Benjamin E’s great-great Uncle
Herschel took care of his grandfather’s grave, even though there is no halachic obligation to do so. He explained to his family before he died at the age of 96 that he had the merit to live to 96 only because he took care of his grandfather’s grave who also lived until age 96. This is significant to Benjamin E’s family because it is the oldest photograph from his maternal side, and it reminds Benjamin E
and his family of how important his family's religious traditions are.
Benjamin E and his family will cherish this object for many years to come.
Photo Album
Belgium
David S brought in a picture album of his great grandmother’s family for the 2016 Moriah School Heritage Fair. This album, that once belonged to David S’s great grandmother's family, is very
unique. This album has pictures of David S’s maternal great grandmother Elza’s family. Elza was able to receive it when Elza’s family housekeeper from Belgium recovered it. She retrieved it from their home after the family escaped and before the Nazis occupied their home. After the war, in the early 1950s, the family went back to Belgium and met up with the housekeeper who presented them with the most precious item from their house, the photo album. David S’s family would not be able to have family photographs if it wasn’t for their dear and loyal housekeeper.
David and his family will cherish this album for many years.
