War Artifact
Pin from 6 Day War
Israel
Grandmother
My Jewish Heritage symbol is a pin my grandmother got from fighting in the six-day war.
My grandmother was born in Israel and when she was 18 she was drafted into the Israeli army. In her first year, her unit was put on the front lines of the war. Israel won the war in six days, defeating its neighboring countries. My grandmother’s unit was called “Nachal” which in English abbreviates to “Pioneer Youth Fighters”. This pin is from after the war, when my grandmother’s unit was named the #1 unit for the war. She was awarded this pin after the four-day walk to Jerusalem after the war, where they had a big celebration. I am very honored to have a brave grandmother and the wonderful story of her being in the war.
