Bible (Tanach)
Israel
My mother
This Bible has a silver metal cover with beautiful designs and pictures etched into it. In the middle of the front cover you can see the Ten Commandments painted with red, blue, gold and white enamel. There is a crown on top with six smaller turquoise stones. Surrounding the Torah are four turquoise stones. There is Hebrew etching along the top and bottom that says "Ki mitzion tetze torah, udvar Hashem mirushalayim" which means "Torah shall come from Zion and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem".
This beautiful Bible was given to my mother from her mother, my Grandma Sandy. It belonged to my Great-grandmother. Her name was Fay Stein. She went to Israel with my Great Grandfather, Abraham Stein, and brought back three small bibles similar to this one for each of her children. She brought one large one for herself. When she passed away, my Grandma Sandy got it, and then gave it to my mom, Sherry.
It is really beautiful and special because it is being passed down through the generations and shows how important Judaism was to my Great-grandparents. We have it displayed on our wall for everyone to see.
Tallit Bag
Hungary
My father
My artifact is a bag used to hold a Tallit. It is made of green velvet cloth with a zipper on one side. In Hebrew letters on the bag it says Tallit in gold stitching. The Torah scrolls on the bag are silver and gold with red gems on the top and bottom. Coming from the scrolls, there are branches leading to a crown.
The significance of my artifact to my family is that my Great-Grandpa Saul would bring it to Temple with him. Every time he walked into Temple he would be carrying the bag. He gave the tallit bag to my Grandma Naomi. Then Grandma Naomi gave it to my dad.
A Tallit is like a shawl for men that they wear to Temple that has fringes on it. Men wear a Tallit in daytime hours. The fringes are put on to remind them of God’s laws.
