Military Memories
by Shirley G.
The theme of this gallery is Military Memories. Each of the artifacts has to do with our ancestors' experiences in the military.
In this section there are items from different wars. Our ancestors were soldiers who could have been defending Israel, America, or other countries. In this section you will see photos from the war. You will also be able to see dog-tags worn by our ancestors. We learned about these artifacts from our grandparents, great grandparents, or great uncles and aunts.
Army Dog Tag
U.S.A
Douglas G.
This dog tag is a metal ID tag worn around the neck by my great grandfather during the Vietnam War. The artifact is important to my family because it belonged to my grandfather, who is now deceased. On the tag "NG" stands for National Guard. "O" stands for blood type O. "T58" tells that he had a tetanus shot in 1958.
It is significant because my grandfather was one of the Jewish Americans who fought for our country.
Navy uniform
USA
Gerrie B.
This was my great-grandpa Leo's navy uniform. He served for most of WWII. He was stationed somewhere in the Pacific. The role of the Navy during WWII was to defend the Pacific Ocean, US and to attack Japan.
He chose to serve. He didn't have to, he was not drafted, but he wanted to serve his country.
Photograph of my Great Great Grandfather
Russia
Grandmother Rina Z.
This picture was taken of my great great grandfather in 1910. He was in the Russian army. He gave it to my grandmother, Rina, and she keeps it in a photo album.
He was a Russian Jew who enlisted in the army in order to protect people.
