Headdress
Yemen
Emma’s paternal grandmother, Penina N, got this Yemenite Headdress around
the years of 1920-1929. She received the Yemenite Headdress in honor of her
wedding circa 1927. Emma’s family isn’t sure what age her grandmother got
married. Before the wedding, Yemenite Jews have a custom to perform a Henna
Ceremony. Yemenite Jews had this ceremony because when they wore the
headdress, it was said that it brings a colorful touch to the happy couple and it was believed that it warded off evil. In addition, the weight of the headdress and the jewelry which was approximately 40 pounds, was to symbolize the “weight” of marriage. This headdress has been passed down to every single one of Emma’s paternal aunts Ahuva N, Adina N, Osnat N, Avichayil N and Maya N. Emma and her family are very proud of this custom.
Emma and her family are very proud of this custom.
