Max B's paternal grandfather Israel B, was a Holocaust survivor. In 1946, at about the age of 16, he assumed another child’s’ identity and escaped
on an orphan boat to Palestine. In 1948 he fought in the War of Independence to free the State of Israel. The fact that he and his fellow soldiers were successful in winning the war is significant because now Jews have a home and all people can
visit Israel safely. Max B’s grandfather would joke that their guns were from the Napoleon Era. During the War of Independence, the soldiers had very little ammunition, the guns were single-bullet guns and almost as tall as the soldiers were. The soldiers were only allowed to fire on command, and, at the same time, to scare the Arabs. As a result, the Arabs thought the Israelis were a bigger and stronger army.
Israel B was a very important
part of the B family for all that he experienced and accomplished in his life.

from her maternal great-great grandparents, Laura and Jules M. Laura and Jules fled Belgium, Antwerp with their three children because of the
Nazi invasion. Ana, the housekeeper, ran back to the house and salvaged the family photo album knowing it was invaluable to the Moed family.
Fortunately, she was able to returned it to them when they reunited after the war.
