Prayer Mementos
The importance of prayer in Judaism is evident in these artifacts that have survived and still used today.
Tallit
unknown
As my Jewish artifact, I chose my great-grandpa Sam's tallit. It is not his original Bar Mitzvah tallit. He got it in the 1950's. The tallit is white with blue stripes and he wore it during his 2002 ceremony for his duty and service at the temple. He volunteered whenever he could and regularly led the Shabbat service. Volunteering made him feel happy because he loved Judaism and loved serving his community. My artifact is used for remembering him and his kind and gentle heart.
The tallit is a Jewish prayer shawl that has knotted fringes known as tzitzit attached to its 4 corners. The tallit is traditionally worn draped over the shoulders during prayers. The use of the tallit begins in the Biblical period and its significanceis to remember the commandments of G-d.
Antique Prayer Book
Tel Aviv, Israel
Grandma Florence Manoff
This very special prayer book was a gift given by my Great Grandma Ruth Berg to my Grandma Florence M. (her daughter) on the day of my father's bris. My father was Grandma Florence's first born of three boys. Because my Grandma Florence was my Great Grandma Ruth's only daughter, this was a very special and significant event in my family's history. And it was commemorated with this prayer book that my Great Grandma Ruth purchased and brought back to the U.S.A. from Tel Aviv, Israel.
My family has cherished this prayer book for almost 43 years and we have used it for all kinds of happy family occasions including Jewish holidays, Shabbat dinners, and other memorable moments in our lives. Israel was such an important part of Great Grandma Ruth's life and she took numerous trips there through Women's League for Israel. Although she has passed away, this prayer book is our connection to her and to Israel making it a very important part of our Jewish and Family Heritage.
