Grandma's Picture
Vienna, Austria
Phyllis L
This is a picture of my grandmother, Toni, before she came to America. She was born in Vienna, Austria in November 1925. In this photo she was 13. It is the only picture we have of her at that age. Toni and her sisters were sponsored by a family member, Uncle Willy Feldman, so that they could come to America before the war was in full force. Their parents left for Israel, as they could not come to America. Eventually the family was reunited in the USA.
Toni’s uncle shared his home, taught the girls English, helped them to get jobs.
I am named Max in honor of Toni’s husband Maxim Plutner, my grandpa.
Picture of Great Grandmother's Wedding
New York City
Anita and Jon M
This is a photograph of my great-grandma Julia’s wedding in New York. Both my grand-grandparents came from Russia and their mothers knew each other. My great-grandpa came to the USA first. Before my great-grandma left Russia her mother told her to look out for great-grandpa Alex. They met and eventually married.
This photo is important because it helps to remember my great-grandma and a happy moment in her life. It is also a part of our family’s history.
Serigraph of Miriam
Israel
Jennifer P
Victor Shifrin, my great-grandfather, bought this serigraph of Miriam signed by the painter, Shraga Weill. He liked to collect Jewish art to decorate his house. When he died, my mother inherited the serigraph, and we have had it in the house ever since.
Miriam represents joy, music, wisdom, and leadership. My parents inherited this at their wedding because my grandmother, Cantor Helene Reps, wanted them to share these traits with their family.
