Spoon & Fork Silverware
America
my dad
My great grandma sewed this fork and spoon to her dress so nobody would take it while she traveling across the country
in a horse and wagon.
My great grandma used this silverware every single Shabbat. She worked very hard on Shabbat.
It is wonderful that Jews have celebrated Shabbat for so many years and that we continue to celebrate it.
Segelbaum Drygoods Card
dry goods store in america
dad
This was a card that was handed out trying to get customers to come to the
Segelbaum dry goods store. This store was in downtown Minneapolis.
The card is 158 years old.
My family emigrated to America from Germany and started a new life here.
They showed the value of hard work and keeping Jewish traditions alive.
"Toba's Story"
Fargo, ND
My dad
My Grandma Toba wrote this book around 1974 to 1975 in Fargo, ND.
She wrote this about her family growing up in rural western North Dakota.
It was part of a bigger project about the history of the Jews in North Dakota.
Thus book tells the story of my grandma growing up in a rural town in Fargo, North Dakota.
She grew up in a very small Jewish community. Her family was big and she had six siblings.
Her parents strongly believed in following their Jewish heritage and knowing where they come from.
My grandma kept Kosher and celebrated all the Jewish holidays. Part of being Jewish is being a mensch and she was one.
Manifest and Image of ship
Ellis Island
Great Grampa
My family thinks this is a very cool artifact to have.
The reason we have it is that my grandma went to Ellis Island and was able to look up her father. That is where she got it.
In 1922 lots of Jews were coming to a America from Europe.
My great grandpa was on one of the boats coming to America. This is an image and manifest of the ship he came on.
Tree Of Life Necklace
James Avery Craftsman
Mommy
As children, when mom would put us to bed and sing us the shama, we would bat at the necklace like cats. All three children (Madi, nina, and me, sam)played with it at night.
Adam and eve picked forbiden fruit of the tree(of life)in the torah.
Salt and Pepper Shakers
Israel
My dad
These salt and pepper shakers are important to my family because they were a wedding gift to my parents when they got married.
I especially like them because they are from Israel.
Israel is very important to the Jewish people.
The words for salt and pepper are written in Hebrew, the language of the Jews.
I hope to visit Israel when I'm older.
Ships Manifest
Ellis Island
My Dad
teh reason why this is important to my family is because it shows how and were and when my family came to America
The reason why this is part of my jewish heritage is beacuse many jews immigrated to America from Europe during that time period because of Jewish persecution.
Candle Lighter
Florida
Stacy K.
My family was on vacation in Florida, and we were in the Jewish flea market.
My grandparents wanted us to start a new tradition, so they bought us a candle stick lighter.
This candle stick lighter is supposed to be used on Shabbat. You use it to light the candles so you don't burn yourself.
When we light the candles, we usher in Shabbat. I want to continue this tradition when I grow older.
Diary of Emil Baff
America-China-Japan
Michael Flicker
This is the diary of the vacation my great-great grandparents took to China in 1937 (right before China was bombed by Japan.) They got stuck in China when they were bombed by Japan. The diary tells where they went and how they escaped. This is an important story in our family's history.
The Jewish connection to it is that my great great grandparents were Jewish.
It is a story that in 100 years could be told to some of our family desendants.
Telling stories is an important part of our Jewish tradition.
Kosher Towel Holders
Isreal
Great Grandmother
My great grandmother got these towel holders in Israel. They are special because she is no longer with us.
My grandmother kept kosher and these held separate meat and milk dish towels.
If it was a meat meal she used the meat or "fleishig" dish towel. If it was a dairy meal, she used the milk or "milchig" dish towel.
Keeping kosher is a very important part of being Jewish.
It is mostly about us being separate and different. It teaches us self control even where food is involved.
Twelve Tribes Clock
Israel
parents
This clock belonged to my great great grandparents and was kept on display in their living room.
It is special to our family because they are no longer with us and it reminds us of them.
The 12 tribes are an important part of our Jewish history.
They were the foundation of our nation.
This clock reminds us of a very important time in our history.
