Family Tree Book
Russia
Great Grandma
As my Jewish artifact, I chose a book called Memories of Tillie Zaslow. It is a book written by my great grandma Tillie. It has an off-white cover drawn by my grandpa. In the book, there are chapter and pictures about my family.
My artifact is used for remembering my family and where we came from. This is a very interesting book and an amazing story.
Purse
Russia
Great Grandmother
My artifact is a purse that’s made in Russia and was used for special occasions like bat mitzvahs, bar mitzvahs and weddings. My mom’s grandmother gave it to my mom and my mom keeps it in a safe spot because it was manufactured during World War II. Also it’s very meaningful to her.
I chose the artifact because it’s the most special thing in my house and meaningful to my family. My mom’s grandmother got this purse when she was my age. This is the most unique purse I ever saw! It very unique because it expands to a little circle and may be the smallest purse I ever saw!
Necklace
Pearls
Russia
My artifact is my great grandma’s necklace. It came from Russia. My great grandpa gave this necklace to my great grandma for their wedding.
When they moved to the USA, they weren’t allowed to bring anything so she sewed it in the hem of her shirt. She used it as an everyday necklace.
Picture
Dad
Dad
My artifact is a famous picture of Sholem Aleichem. He wrote funny stories. His famous story was called, “Tevye the Milkman” It was about a Jewish family in Russia.
This picture/object came from my dad and his family. The artifact is a picture of Sholem Aleichem.
Necklace
Argentina
Great Grandparents
My artifact is a necklace from Argentina. On the necklace is a menorah. The other side says my great grandparents’ names and my Dad’s Bar Mitzvah date.
It is special because my great grandparents gave it to my dad for his Bar Mitzvah.
Jewish Star
Great Grandmother
My artifact for the Living Museum is a gold Jewish star. The Jewish star is very important to me and my family. My artifact is a gold six pointed star with lines and engravings carved into it. Also in the middle there are two shades of blue with abegadah vezehtai (the initial letters for each of the 10 Commandments) written in Hebrew inside.
This Jewish star came from my great-grandmother who passed it down to her daughter and so on and now it belongs to me. This is so important to me because my great-grandmother wore it as a child. When my great- grandmother was about seven years old, her mother gave this necklace to her as a gift and when she had my grandma, she decided she wanted to pass it down. They would wear it on holidays or special events, because it was so very valuable and I soon will too. I hope that when I have when I have a daughter, she will wear it too. It is a very special piece of jewelry that is important to my family.
