Holiday Observance
In this gallery, students have gathered artifacts that are used to help celebrate certain Jewish holidays.
Matzah Cover
Grandfather
Grandfather
What I brought is a matzah cover. It’s a gold stringed matzah cover, with a Jewish star in the middle, and white in the middle too. My artifact comes from my grandfather and was passed down to my mother, and someday will be passed down to me or my sister. Every time my grandfather had to cover the matzah, he would use this cover, and when he died, he passed it down to my mother.
My artifact was used for when my grandfather has to cover the matzah.
Menorah
Israel
Mom
My artifact for the Living Museum is a menorah. This menorah isn’t ordinary, it’s very special. It came from my grandfather who passed it down to my mom. My mom has used it when she was a kid. She then passed it to me. This menorah originally came from Israel. It is made out of a brownish-yellowish metal. It has Hebrew lettering on it and it used for Hanukkah.
My artifact is very special because my mom used it with her dad all throughout her childhood.
Menorah
Mother
My artifact is a small menorah that my mother gave me. It’s a simple menorah made out of silver. The base is just a plain rectangle with nine candle holders. Behind the candle holders is a big Jewish Star. As I said before, the menorah belonged to my mother. It was her very first one. She got it from her school in 3rd grade.
My mother used it every Hanukkah. We have a lot of menorahs in our house, so it is a tradition that we each use a different one. Even though we have more menorahs then we will use, somebody always uses my mother’s.
Sponge Cake Pot
Great Great Grandmother
My artifact for the living museum is a pot from my great great grandma, Etta. The pot is gray, its metal and it has a cylinder sticking up in the middle. My great great grandma loved to bake so she bought a pot from the store to make sponge cake.
She always made sponge cake for Passover for everyone in the family because no one knew how to make it until one day, my mom was itching to make that sponge cake even though she was only a teen. She called Etta over the phone and she told her how to make it. When she was done, Grandma Etta ate and said it was the best sponge cake she has ever tasted. When she got very old, she didn’t pass her pot down to her daughter or her granddaughter, she passed it on to my mom. Now, every year, we make the sponge cake for everyone to pass down the tradition and soon the pot will be mine.
Menorah
Great Grandmother
My artifact is a menorah. My artifact came from my great-grandmother and it was passed down to my grandmother and then it got passed down to my mother and now we have it at our house. My artifact has been brassed two times. It has a Jewish star right in the middle of it and the menorah is about one foot high and one foot long.
My artifact has been passed down many generations. We are very careful with it. When I get older, I hope that my mom will pass it down to me. My artifact is used for Hanukkah and we use it as a family menorah. When we use it, we put really nice candles in it and we always make sure that it is clean after we use it. We think it is really important so we put it in a glass case with a lot of other important objects.
