Painting of my Great x4 Grandfather
Philadelphia, PA
My Grandmother
This artifact is significant to my family because it provides great memories for my grandmother and my other relatives. Although they never knew my great great great great grandfather, it still provides great memories of being told about him and his life. My grandmother tells me she remembers that her grandmother used to tell her stories about him, and about how he told stories to my grandma's grandma. He would sit in a rocking chair, and tell them make-believe stories. I hope that we will always learn about our past, and that way we can keep the memories alive. If we do not forget our past, about our Jewish religion, we can keep it going forever.
I think this painting shows how Orthodox Jewish men dressed in the 1900's. He had the beard, clothes, and always wore a kippah on his head. In the painting, it shows him wearing the kippah, as he always did, and the clothing he wore.
This artifact is also a part of my Jewish Religion because my grandmother remembers stories she was told of him at different holidays and how he celebrated them.
Family Wedding
Atlanta
This picture was taken a year after my grandfather arrived in Atlanta from the Island of Rhodes. He came to live in Atlanta for a better life. This wedding was for his cousin.
It shows a Jewish wedding and ceremony. This shows a picture of my family from their emigration from the Island of Rhodes, Greece to Atlanta, Georgia. Some of them moved to Atlanta for for more opportunities.
Picture of my Great Grandparents
New York
Mom
This picture is very important to my family because it is one of the only pictures taken of my great grandparents. It is also important because I was named after them. Helen and Leeroy results in Hannah Leigh. They were beautiful people and still live with us in our hearts.
They were very active in the Jewish community. My great grandfather passed on his Jewish beliefs to my mother who passed them on to me. I was named after my Great Grandma Helen, my Hebrew name is Chayila which is also the Hebrew name for Helen.
My great great grandma (Grandma Helen's mother) was from Poland and came to the United States because the Jews were not treated very well, they had no religious freedom. The same thing for my great great grandpa. On the other side, the same thing happened but in Russia. Both my Grandma Helen and Grandpa Leeroy were originally from New York but their parents were from Russia and Poland.
Picture of my Grandfather
Poland
This is my Grandfather after the Holocaust. He survived Auschwitz. His parents died in the Holocaust when he was 16 years old. He was in the concentration camps but survived the concentration camps. When the war ended he moved to Belgium. When he moved to Belgium he became a police officer.
My grandfather was a Jew who survived the Holocaust, Nazis and concentration camps. Also, he never gave up his Jewish religion even if the Nazis would have killed him.
WWI Picture
Israel
Grandmother
This picture is important to me because it is a picture of my Great-Grandfather in WWI, the picture's significance is that it shows my Great-Grandfather next to Ben Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel. Meaning that I have a connection to Ben Gurion, bringing me closer to learning about my entire Jewish heritage.
This picture proved how my Great- Grandfather's going to serve in Israel led to a greatness of bonding between him and Ben Gurion.
