These artifacts are very precious and also have a lot of stories to tell.
Mortar and Pestle
Hungary
Mother
This brass mortar and pestle belonged to my maternal great-grandparents. My great-grandmother cooked and baked for her large family. She used this brass mortar and pestle to crack and crush nuts.
This mortar and pestle would have been used when she made charosis for Passover.
Charosis is a mixture of apples, pears, walnuts and wine. It resembles the mortar used by the Israelites to make bricks while enslaved in Egypt.
Great Grandmother's Ladle

Grandma Y.

Used on Jewish holidays.
Spice Box
Germany
Mel O.
It is one of the few artifacts that my family has from the past. This spice box has been many places. It started in Germany and then was brought along by my grandmother to London to escape the Nazis.
My grandma used this spice box on shabbat with her family until she moved. Then she continued to use it throughout her life.
