Shabbat Heirlooms
Kyle's Silver Candlesticks
Russia
These candlesticks were given to my great, great, great grandmother when the Nazi army came to Russia. They took all of her things but she kept a tablecloth and these candlesticks. She wrapped the candlesticks in the cloth and she took special care of them because they were the only things she had. She passed them on to my Mom.
Candlesticks are important to the Jewish religion because we use them for many holidays including Shabbat. On Shabbat we light candles, bring the light of the flame into our hearts and say the blessing.
Gadi's Candlesticks
Jerusalem
This artifact (candlesticks) was brought from Israel by one of my relatives. It is made of little stones, metal and enamel. This artifact was bought in Jerusalem. These candlesticks were not used much. I wonder if the candlesticks are older than me.
My artifacts are Shabbat candlesticks. These candlesticks can be used for any Jewish holiday when we say blessings over candles.
Zoe's Bronze Candlesticks
Russia
These candlesticks are important to me because my mom got these candlesticks from her mom and she got them from her mom. That means it was passed down for four generations. My great, great grandma came to New York when she was little and she brought these candlesticks with her and then gave them to her daughter and that started the tradition.
Candlesticks are important to the Jewish people because you use them on holidays and every shabbat. We say a blessing every time we light them.
Jordana's Kiddush Cup
New York

This is my grandparents kiddush cup. This kiddush cup was given to my great grandparents, Mr.and Mrs.Posnok. It is made out of pure silver. Mr.and Mrs. Posnok got this kiddush cup on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1951. They got it from their temple.
It was made in New York in 1947 by silversmith, Towle. They got this kiddush cup because they were very active in the temple. It was given to my grandpa on his bar mitzvah. If you look at the kiddush cup you can see the writing of who gave it to them, when they gave it to them, and who got it. I hope to get the kiddush cup one day.
This kiddush cup is used for shabbat and pesach. My grandparents bring it to my house so we can enjoy pesach with the "soul" of my grandparents. I feel like they are sitting down at the table with me.
Rachel's Spice Box
Israel
Mom
The significance of this artifact to my family is that it used to belong to my great-grandmother who gave it to my mother. Now it is really significant and important to my family!
The significance of this artifact to Jewish heritage is that you use it at a Havdalah service which marks the end of Shabbat. It is filled with spices that smell good. There is a blessing said over the spice box at the service. That is the significance of the spice box!
