Heritage Fair 2009 ( 16830 )
Moriah School
6
The Heritage Fair began at Moriah in 1997, and is it an essential component of the sixth grade curriculum. Over the past twelve years, the sixth graders and their families have continued to recognize the importance and uniqueness of this event. The Heritage Fair literally connects all of us with our historic past
The Heritage Fair is a complex project that begins each year in January as the students are first introduced to this event. At that time, students visited the Museum of Jewish Heritage--A Living Memorial to the Holocaust to analyze heirlooms and artifacts exhibited in the museum galleries. Students, in pairs, looked through targeted galleries and studied specific elements of objects in the museum. This background information prepared the students to have detailed conversations with their parents and grandparents to select an heirloom with a story connected to it to display at the fair. Students proudly then brought their heirlooms to school and revealed the true significance of their heirloom to their classmates. All of the sixth graders recognize the clear difference between an object’s monetary and sentimental value. This is followed by a detailed writing process in which each sixth grader must communicate the story of his/her object for this catalogue.
