Military Memories
By Albert M.
Jewish history is riddled with conflict, war, and massacre. Although in history, the Jewish identity has been subjected to massacres in which Jews were oppressed by enemies that they couldn’t defeat, there are many cases in which you will find Jews at war.
In the ancient times of the Navi you see that there was constantly war. These wars were fought against the Philistines, the Seven Tribes who inhabited Israel after the Exodus, the two kings that were located in Jordan, Amalek, and the Greeks. There were even conflicts within the nation such as the conflict with Saul and David. Yet for one thousand years Jews remained in control except for a short period of seventy years in which they were in exile. Even then a handful of Jews remained in Israel until the Romans exiled us permanently.
In modern wars you can find many Jewish soldiers. Patriotic Jews have fought in many wars such as The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, World War I, World War II, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War. There have also been Jews involved in The Cuban Missile Crisis, and Operation Desert Storm.
The mementos that these great soldiers acquired are symbols of their courage and daring in the battlefield. These soldiers risked their lives for their country and their beliefs. This is the significance of these objects.

The second pin was from the War of Independence, from 1948-1951. Its colors were light blue, dark blue, white, and red. The third pin was from the Sinai War in 1957, and
the colors were orange, red, light blue, dark blue.
The Israeli government decided to give medals to all the people who fought in the wars. My grandpa was one of the people who fought so he received these honors. He wore them on special occasions.
My grandfather was given these badges because he defended Israel, the Jewish homeland.

This American flag was made in the U.S.A. The family of Joseph S received this flag in 2004 when he passed away. The US government started giving out flags in the year 1994. The flag means a lot to Jason G. because he was named after his grandfather, Joseph S. Joseph S. passed away 5 days before Jason G.’s birthday. The Government gave Joseph this flag because he fought in the US army in World War II. He also received a purple heart which was given to soldiers who got wounded in war.
