My great grandfather enlisted in the army in 1917, when he was 21 years old. He was sent to Fort Bliss, which is near El Paso, Texas. He was assigned to the cavalry, but didn't see any action in the war. He didn't like the cavalry, so he was transferred to the artillery, and was sent to Tucson, Arizona. After the armistice was signed, he was discharged from the army and this enabled him to get his citizenship. He came back to Houston where he got married and settled down.
